Weight Management Medicine (Mounjaro®) - Update for Patients
Information about the new weight management medication and when it will become available - June 2025
What's Changed?
In December 2024, NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) approved a new medication called tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro®) for weight management. This can be prescribed by GP surgeries, but needs to be part of a complete support programme including diet and exercise guidance.
Why can't I get this medication yet?
It still needs the same wraparound services as Wegovy® (semaglutide), so that patients are supported to make the changes needed for the medication to be most effective. Northamptonshire ICB knows there are patients eligible for this medication who would like to be able to access it as soon as possible. However, this medication will be made available to patients in phases over several years.
What Should I Do?
We kindly ask you not to contact your GP surgery about Mounjaro® for weight loss at this time. Here's why:
- GP surgeries are extremely busy and additional enquiries reduce the time available for patient appointments
- GPs have been asked not to prescribe Mounjaro® until the full weight management service is ready
- The medication needs wraparound support services (diet and exercise guidance) to be effective
What's being done?
We are working with healthcare experts across Northamptonshire to develop a Specialist Weight Management Service. This service will provide the complete support patients need and will prescribe weight management medication when appropriate. It will make tirzepatide available to the group of patients deemed the highest priority. The priorities have been decided nationally based on both Body Mass Index (BMI) and related health conditions.
We will update this page when the service becomes available
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to provide the best possible care for our patients.
